In Memoriam: Lady Bird Johnson

Organizations like Scenic Alabama owe our existence, in a way, to Lady Bird Johnson. Through her efforts, President Lyndon Johnson pushed Congress to adopt the Highway Beautification Act. The USA Today story about her had a nice quote from Kevin Fry, president of Scenic America.

We still have much work to do, as the Highway Beautification Act has been watered down over the years. But imagine what our roads might be like if that law did not exist! I hope you'll take this time to give thanks for Lady Bird, her work, and the glorious results - many billboard free highways, acres of wildflowers, and a more beautiful country.

I hope you'll consider a memorial contribution to any of the organizations that have worked hard over the years to beautify our roads: Scenic Alabama, Scenic America, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, or a local garden or wildflower club.
